Release Train Process

We follow a release train model with these characteristics:

  1. Fixed Release Dates: Releases go out on the 15th of scheduled months
  2. Feature-based Planning: Features ready by code freeze are included
  3. No Delays: Release dates don’t change; features slip to next release
  4. Beta Program: Each release includes a 1-week beta period

Code Freeze Policies

During code freeze periods (typically 1-2 weeks before release):

  1. Only bug fixes allowed, no new features
  2. All PRs require two approvers
  3. Automated test suite must pass with 95%+ coverage
  4. Performance testing must show no regressions
  5. Release manager approval required for all changes

Release Approval Process

Before each release, the following approvals are required:

  1. QA Sign-off: Verification of all test cases
  2. Product Owner Sign-off: Confirmation of feature completion
  3. Security Review: Approval from security team
  4. Performance Benchmark: Meeting or exceeding performance criteria
  5. Executive Approval: Final go/no-go decision

Hotfix Policy

For critical issues discovered in production:

  1. Issue is assessed for severity and impact
  2. If critical, hotfix release is scheduled within 3 business days
  3. Fix is developed in hotfix branch from main
  4. Abbreviated testing focuses on the fix and regression testing
  5. Emergency approval process is followed for deployment

This schedule is reviewed and updated monthly. Significant changes are communicated to all stakeholders via email and during sprint reviews.
